She knows the price of fighting for what you believe in.
He knows the pain of losing the people that matter most to the cause.
It works like this: Don’t ask, don’t tell, but someone’s bound to slip sooner or later (they always do).
Europe comes to him through an internship second year into the underwhelming experience that is college without the football.
(Not one foot on the green, and he fell down a flight of stairs because his shoes weren’t tied and that was all it took, all they needed to send him packing.)
But this is London and for a boy like him so homespun that anyone can guess just by looking at him, it’s everything.
“Hi. I’m Matt.”
She’ll roll her eyes with her friends later and call him the awkward American.
Yet when one of them asks for his number, she lies and says he didn’t supply her with one.
He’s the kind of boy that seeps into someone’s life, one stutter at a time.
And he seeps into hers, like rain through a hole she was sure she patched up long ago.
“You’re too quiet.”
A blush, a shaky hand, and his fingers find hers, lacing round her wrist like wire, “I know.”
He drops a kiss to her forehead, and the apology weighs itself there.
Note: The silences aren’t what bother her. It’s not being able to read him like she did with all the others.
That’s what gets her. That’s why she stays.
First loves are ghosts that linger in the background.
Julie’s smile startles in hers, Ron’s laugh washes into his, but when he asks her if she’s doing anything for the holidays, she already has an excuse ready for mum.
Texas hums with heat and answers.
She’s listening.
